Is this really going to be it? Another public execution of a Leader so we can have a contest between last times runner up and the guy that couldn't be bothered to stand last time? Is 6 weeks of two middle class white men parading the country basically agreeing with each other going to excite anyone?
I'm deeply diasappointed that virtually every other credible alternative candidate has ruled them selves out. I can feel a streak of bloody mindedness comming on over this election so my view is this.
If it really is going to be just Clegg vs Huhne then we urgently need to mobilise for a third candidate. Draft Julia Goldsworthy or make Charlie the Alex Salmond of the Liberal Democrats.
I'm aware that i'm open to the charge of making it a circus ( I think others have done that) but the only redeeming feature of this fiasco IMHO is the oppertunity to get some coverage and show case talent. I just can't see Clegg VS Huhne selling many tickets.

Draft Julia or come back Charlie?

After what happened to Ming, do you really think, that if Charlie was elected to be the leader, the media would give him a fair chance? Even if he has already recovered from alcoholism, do you think that the media would stop whispering about his ability to succesfully lead Liberal Democrats? No, I think it's better both for Charlie and the party, that he won't run, though I'm sure that some people in other parties would wish it.

Any candidate that stands this will be either a runner up in the previous election or someone who didn't stand last time. Or Mark Oaten.
I agree that it would be nice to have a broader choice though. They're both ex-Westminster school, ex-MEP, 2005 intake white males with backgrounds in economics. One is possibly marginally to the right than the other.
I think John Thurso should stand on the basis of winning Stephen Tall's poll on sexiest Lib Dem. He has an elegance that the posh-toffs at the Tory party cannot even match. And I'm sure he must already be higher in the official precedence than the leader of the opposition...:)
And then thee's me - is there any reason I can't stand and accept a peerage if I win to get me into parliament? I'll show them liberal! Send my PMQs through from the Other Place by carrier flunky.
In response to anon and under I am being a bit provocative. If kennedy could look into a camera and say "I have been off the bottle for x period" then I would seriously support him. However my understanding is he can't.
Jock, If the party constitution didn't specify an MP as leader then I'd be all for the emergency enoblement of Stephen Tall so he could be Leader. Lynne Featherstone could rule as his regent in the Commons.
